Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi share the screen in 1935's The Raven. It has nothing to do with the Edgar Allen Poe poem except that Lugosi's character, Dr. Vollin, is obsessed with Poe and The Raven to him symbolizes the one thing in life of which he is sure: Death. Karloff is Bateman, a violent criminal who gets his face butchered by Vollin and then serves him, kind of like Vollin's own private Igor. It was their second film together after The Black Cat (no one's counting Gift of Gab from 1934 where they both have cameos). Universal was still billing Boris Karloff without his first name as Karloff! No, the exclamation point's not mine, that's actually how they billed him. And much to Bela's chagrin, Karloff! got top billing. Another pic below. As always, click to enlarge.
