Mystery Couple

It's a mystery movie they're playing in and their identity is a mystery too. To you that is, not to me. I'm the one that scanned it so I ought to know. But I'll be honest with you, I didn't know who they were before I scanned the photo. Or maybe I did. What do I mean by that? Well...

She's a mystery regardless. With bit parts and only a handful of leads in B-Pictures, she retired from film in 1942. But the male lead, that's a different story. Turns out I've heard his voice a thousand times, and if you're over thirty, you probably have too. And the director? One of the big ones, to cinephiles at least. The average moviegoer probably isn't as familiar with him.

Too much more and I'll give the game away, which as always, I plan on doing anyway with a series of increasingly telling clues (by the way, the actor's name still may not be familiar to you but the clues will lead you to him nonetheless).

But for now - Does anyone have any idea what this movie is and who these two actors are?

It's Bonus Round Time

The director of this film directed another film in the forties that has the same title as a Steely Dan song as well as the title of a 90's album by an internationally famous and legendary singer/songwriter. That singer/songwriter is Bob Dylan. His nineties album has the same title as the Steely Dan song from the eighties, which is the same title as another movie directed by this director.

The lead actress in the movie only has one line in the whole movie. Just one. At the end.

In 1947, the actress in this clip was in Out of the Past. The lead actor in the movie featured today did a movie in 1947 called Out of the Blue.

Name That Movie 18

It's Name That Movie time, for the eighteenth time. Is it the last time as well? For this particular game I mean (NTM is recurring so each time there's a winner, everyone goes back to zero, and it all starts over). Arbogast has nine points and the first to ten wins. When I started this I figured it would be close throughout. I never expected one person would get so many right. All this could be a moot point if Arbo doesn't get this one but if he does I think I'll try to make future NTM's themed, as in all foreign, all silent, all thirties and so on. Make sure you really look at the clip. Look behind the horses for clues as to when the film was made and when it takes place. And look at the scenery. That gives an idea of where.

Okay, here's the Bonus Round, minus audio track. Somebody, anybody, guess this before Arbo. I want this game to come down to the wire but it's looking more and more like Arbo is going to steamroll to the finish line. Good luck everyone!

Name that Movie 11

And so we move on to number eleven. Last week's two clips enjoyed guessing in the comments section for two full days until the second was finally pegged by Krauthammer just before Sunday became Monday. The movie was Bulldog Drummond Escapes. The first lasted all Saturday and into Sunday before Arbogast got it (The Day the Earth Caught Fire), bringing his total points to six (one came from naming all four actresses in this pic). This one being a more recent film probably means it won't last long before someone gets it (and I've seen it written up recently so it's probably fresh in a few people's minds). Who cares anyway? First come, first served. Guess away and get your point. This one has the audio track in place, the Bonus Round clip will not (too much dialogue giving the game away).

Bonus Round - Name That Movie 10

Okay, here's the bonus round. After I put up the last one, The Day the Earth Caught Fire, it occured to me that I used it in Frames of Reference, my clip montage released back in June. Those clips, except for a few rentals, came from my DVD collection and these Name That Movie clips come from it as well. I thought it best to not use any more clips from DVDs I used for Frames of Reference lest someone just browse the list of titles in that montage to determine what movie it is. So from here on out there will be no more crossover. For this one I dug into my DVD collection to find something a little more obscure for most people. I suspect there aren't many who have seen it and the clip, while important, reveals nothing to anyone who hasn't seen it. So, uh, good luck.

The actor in the clip was a character actor who in the course of his career appeared in many well known and highly regarded films of the thirties and forties. He often played the villain. Interestingly, his name is the name of a character in a classic Russ Meyer film.

The lead actor in this film would later win an Academy Award for Best Actor

*****CLUE NUMBER THREE*****

A third actor in the film was a pilot in World War I and later a stunt pilot. He was also a model airplane enthusiast who had hobby shops in the Los Angeles area until the sixties. During World War II his company created radio controlled target drones for the Army, some 15,000.

If you can figure out all three of those actors, and you should I hope from the clues, you've got it because they only appeared in one movie all together, this one. Two of them, the actor in this clip and the future Oscar winner, appeared again in another movie but this is the only one with all three together.

One last thing: Now that I've provided these clues be quick about it. Arbogast is out there somewhere, ready to pounce.

Okay, except for my first ever clip when no one was quite sure there was a game going on this is the longest one has gone without being guessed. So let me provide a clue. The clues will start out general and if still no one gets it they will become very specific until I reveal pretty much everything but the title. So here's the first general clue:

The weapons that these people are protesting set the plot of the movie in motion. That should do it I think. Someone could probably google that and come up with it. I'll find out in the morning if anyone did. Happy Googling!

As always, here's the bonus round. This time I left the sound in (in fact, why take it out unless there's a musical cue or name spoken that might give it away) because the actor mumbles to himself throughout. With the sound muted, it looked like there was dialogue there that might help and I didn't want you to feel shorted. Guess away.

Okay, the new clip is up in the sidebar. My wife got this one in under five seconds. Of course, this is her favorite period of films to watch so that was no surprise. Still, to a classic film lover I think this one's pretty easy. Even if you haven't seen it you might be able to put it together from the images shown. Remember, first one to answer correctly in the comment section here gets a point. And the first one to 10 points wins. Yes, it used to be 25 but that could take forever. I mean, that's 25 weeks and unless the same person wins every single week we could be looking at a year or more before there's a winner. So now it's 10 points. Good luck everyone.
